A police officer exercised discretion while stopping a vehicle for an expired licence on Friday morning.
According to the Ontario Provincial Police Ottawa detachment, an officer got a notification from the cruiser’s Automatic Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) software that a vehicle’s owner had an expired licence.
The vehicle was stopped near Rochester on Highway 417 during the morning commute.
The officer gave the driver an opportunity to renew their licence using the Service Ontario website.
After completing the forms, the driver was fined $110 instead of a $325 fine.
“Times are tough for many financially right now, but police still have a job to do, and the public still has to make sure all their paperwork is up to date before driving,” police noted.
