20-year-old facing criminal driving charge for excessive speeding

A young driver from the nation’s capital had his licence suspended and is facing a hefty fine after police caught a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed.

Provincial police said that on Tuesday around 1:00 a.m., a patrol officer on Highway 417 clocked a vehicle going 188 km/h.

The officer stopped the driver who is charged criminally with dangerous operation.

Following an undercover provincial police blitz that saw dozens of charges laid and several motorcycles seized, the Crown in Ottawa and police reached an agreement in September.

In consultation, the two agreed that any speeds over 180 km/h, officers can lay a dangerous driving charge. This is one tactic police are trying in order to curb the number of high-profile speeding incidents in the nation’s capital.

On top of the serious charge, he is facing a vehicle impound for 14 days, a minimum $2,000 fine, six demerit points and a one-year driving prohibition upon conviction.
