‘But my dad needs the car’: Police catch several stunt drivers over weekend

Police were out in full force this past weekend catching a number of drivers for disobeying speed limits in the nation’s capital.

One such driver was an 18-year-old who was caught going 125 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on Bronson Avenue.

According to police the G2 driver had the family car impounded for 14 days, their licence suspended for 30 days and faces a minimum $2,000 fine upon conviction and six demerit points.

“But my dad needs the car for work,” is not a valid excuse for stunt driving, police noted.

Ottawa police also caught two drivers going well above the limit on Hawthorne Road, a rural street in parts of the city’s south communities.

Both were going 119 km/h along the 70 km/h roadway. One of the accused also ran away but police say they later charged them at their residence.

Near the end of the weekend, officials caught a driver slowing down as they passed a marked cop car only to accelerate and be caught by an unmarked police vehicle.

Officers said it happened on Highway 417. The driver accelerated to 155 km/h, with the unmarked vehicle catching the driver in the act.

The situation “is never going to end well,” police said on X.

On Jan. 12, police caught a driver for the second time since 2023 stunt driving. Officials said they were going 64 km/h over the limit on Davidson Road, in south Ottawa.
