Police charged four youths in connection to an incident that sent a high school in the Elmvale community into lockdown on Monday morning.
Officers responded to Hillcrest High School at 9:10 a.m. for an assault with an “edged weapon.” On scene, they found two people with injuries. Police said the two people are in hospital in serious but stable condition.
One of the injured is a student, Diane Pernari, general manager of communications at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) confirmed to CityNews.
“Earlier this morning, there was an altercation inside the school. A student sustained injuries,” she said in an email. “The school staff immediately contacted emergency services and police and paramedics responded. The school administration team activated a lockdown school procedure to ensure students and staff were safe.”
Paramedics told CityNews they treated a male in his late teens who sustained serious injuries.
“Another patient presented themselves at a local hospital and paramedics transferred the patient to another hospital afterwards in stable condition,” Marc-Antoine Deschamps, superintendent of public information for Ottawa paramedics, said in an email.
It is unclear if the other person with injuries is also a student at the school.
In an update, police said when they arrived they arrested a youth and later found three others in connection to the assault. The suspects will not be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Officials say the school is no longer in its lockdown protocols.
Several other schools located in the area, including Franco-Cité Catholic High School across the street did not go into lockdown during the incident.
