Fire in vacant high-rise elevator quickly put out

Crews were called downtown for flames and smoke in an elevator shaft.

Firefighters were on scene by 8:11 a.m. in the 100 block of O’Connor Street. They were met by construction workers who said it was a vacant building.

Officials brought two hose lines through the underground parking garage to attack the flames from above and below. The fire was under control before it could spread throughout the structure.

It was declared out by 9:00 a.m. and ventilation with fans was used throughout the whole building.

A fire investigator is looking into the incident.
