Comedian Tom Green releases ‘I’m a Canadian’ song in wake of Canada-U.S. political tension

Amid tensions between Canada and the United States with tariffs “still on the books,” a famous Canadian comic has released a patriotic song to try and smooth things over while sending a message to the neighbours to the south.

Ottawa’s Tom Green has released his song ‘I’m a Canadian‘ complete with a music video that features him wearing Canada’s national hockey jersey while skating on the Rideau Canal.

In the video, Green also goes ice fishing and gives nods to Tim Hortons, poutine and ketchup chips.

Featured in the video is Ottawa’s Mayor, Mark Sutcliffe, singing along to the lyrics with Tom Green.

Mayor Sutcliffe describes Green as an “Ottawa legend” and appreciates how he represents the city.

“He and I have known each other for many years and he’s a terrific ambassador for his hometown. He loves our city and promotes Ottawa enthusiastically to the world. It was a lot of fun to be on the Rideau Canal with Tom to record his patriotic new video.”

In the song, Green also mentions his time as a star in Hollywood but says he had to return to Ontario to ride his mule.

President Donald Trump has been publicly musing about making Canada the 51st state, sparking Green, politicians and many Canadians to express more patriotism in the face of American merger rhetoric.

Towards the end of the song, the lyrics read “We’re never going to be the 51st state” which is followed up by Green inviting his “American friends” to visit Canada to go fishing.
