Driver charged following collision that caused death of 14-year-old cyclist

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) East Region have charged a driver in relation to a collision that occurred this past summer — resulting in the death of a 14-year-old cyclist.

On August 30th, 2024, the teen was riding eastbound on the paved, westbound shoulder of County Road 2 in South Stormont Township, when she was struck by a westbound car, wrote OPS in an X post.

“The initial investigation has found that the young woman, a resident of South Stormont, had been riding her bicycle eastbound on the westbound shoulder when she was struck by a westbound car,” police said.

Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry Counties (SDG) OPP, the South Stormont Fire Department and Cornwall SDG Paramedics responded to the scene of the collision, attempting to save the teen’s life.

“Life saving measures were attempted but the young woman was pronounced deceased at the scene,” wrote OPP.

SDG OPP, OPP Collision Reconstructionists and technical collision investigators conducted an investigation, which has now been completed.

A 46-year-old woman from Ingleside has been charged — under the Highway Traffic Act — for careless driving causing death.

The accused is set to appear in court on March 18, 2025.

Between January and September 2024, 227 lives were lost on OPP-patrolled roads, with 21 pedestrians and cyclists among those statistics, said OPP.

Leading up to the August 2024 long weekend, officials were urging people to slow down and drive carefully, in efforts to prevent more road fatalities.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted multiple traffic stops, charging over a thousand people and responding to many collisions over the long weekend..

According to provincial officers, OPP laid 1,653 charges across the east region from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2.
