Inmate at Ottawa prison charged with murder following assault

An inmate at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre has been charged with murder following an incident at the jail.

Ottawa police say on Feb. 6 a 44-year-old man assaulted another man at the detention centre.

Three days later, the victim succumbed to their injuries. Officials did not say what led to the violent interaction.

Police identified the deceased as 40-year-old Amr Zohair of Ottawa.

The suspect, Marc Lebrun-Fortin of Ottawa, now faces a new charge of first degree murder. He was originally charged with aggravated assault.

Fortin appeared in court on Wednesday and was taken back into custody.

Police say the investigation continues.
