4-vehicle collision in Manotick including school bus; multiple injured

Emergency personnel were called to a chaotic scene on Monday morning after a multi-vehicle crash left several people in their 20s with serious injuries.

Officials say Mitch Owens Road is closed between Bowesville Road and Manotick Station Road in the south Ottawa community.

Police asked firefighters to come at 7:24 a.m. for the “serious motor vehicle collision,” Nick DeFazio, media relations officer with Ottawa fire told CityNews.

Firefighters on scene saw four vehicles involved; three were pick-up trucks and a school bus. At the time there were no students on board. One of the trucks only had minor damage officials reported and paramedics confirmed there were no injuries.

Another truck was in the ditch near the 6100 block of Mitch Owens Road, with the driver and passenger unresponsive.

At 7:40 a.m. fire crews along with an Ottawa police officer extricated two passengers from the pick-up truck in the ditch and began assessing and treating them.

Paramedics told CityNews that the two adult males were taken to hospital, one in serious but stable condition and one in critical condition.

The second truck with “heavy damage” was the one involved in a head-on collision with the school bus. The male driver was trapped inside.

Firefighters stabilized the vehicle and began extricating the driver using specialized tools. The severity of how the driver was pinned required firefighters to extricate the man for 30 minutes.

This driver was also taken to hospital with serious injuries but in stable condition, paramedics said.

By 8:15 a.m. the driver was removed and they left the scene in control of Ottawa police.

Police confirmed later in a press release that all the people injured were between the ages of 20 to 22.

Officers are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward. People can call the Ottawa Police Service Fatal Collision Investigation Unit at 613-236-1222, extension 2345.
