This past weekend, a young female dog was discovered abandoned on a park bench near the War Museum.
A Good Samaritan gave the abandoned dog his jacket, and proceeded to call Ottawa bylaw, wrote the city in a post on X.
Once bylaw officers arrived, they worked to gain the dog’s trust — eventually carrying her to their vehicle and transporting her to a veterinary clinic on March 16.
In a statement from the City of Ottawa, euthanasia was the most humane option based on the dog’s condition.
“BLRS was deeply saddened to learn today that despite everyone’s best effort, as a result of her state, veterinary professionals determined the most humane option was to euthanize her,” said Tania McCumber, Acting Director with BLRS.
The dog was very thin and unable to walk the email reads.
While the city does not have answers as to why the dog was abandoned, they are reminding residents to seek out other options if they are no longer able to care for their pets.
This includes turning to the the Ottawa Humane Society (OHS), where surrendered pets will receive the care they need from staff and veterinary professionals.
While there is no fee to surrender your pet at the OHS, the organization asks that pet owners fill out a Pet History Form and schedule an appointment in advance.
Residents can learn how to properly and humanely surrender an animal by clicking here, noted the city.
“Residents who are no longer able to care for their pets or need help rehoming them are encouraged to contact the Ottawa Humane Society for resources and support,” officials added.
