Across eastern Ontario, there were 72 fatal collisions in 2024, resulting in the death of 81 individuals, OPP said in statement Thursday. The biggest factor leading to a fatal crash was speed.
OPP reporter 26 fatal collisions were the result of speeding, 16 distracted driving, 12 alcohol or drugs, and 10 no seatbelt.
Officers are “calling on all drivers to be part of the change that makes our roads and highways safer,” the OPP wrote on X.
With increased OPP presence on highways, officers are looking out for drivers who choose to travel at dangerously high speeds.
Public opinion research from the Canadian Automobile Associations shows one in five Canadians admit to regularly driving over the speed limit.
“When we say, ‘slow down’, it’s about preventing tragedies,” Chief Superintendent Lisa Wilhelm, OPP East Region Commander, said in a press release.”It’s about ensuring moms, dads, sons, daughters, friends and loved ones all get safely to their destinations.”
So far in 2025, there have been investigations into 11 fatal collisions resulting in 13 deaths.
“In each case, officers have had to knock on a door and tell family members that a loved one has been killed,” OPP said.
The provincial police force is reminding drivers to slow down, never drive impaired, stay focused on the road ahead, and to always fasten seatbelts.
For those that ride a motorcycle, the same guidance is given — but add a helmet for your protection, noted OPP.
If anyone witnesses dangerous driving, OPP are asking the public to call 9-1-1 immediately.
