During a recent RIDE initiative, officers from the Ottawa Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped a driver who was smoking marijuana while driving.
According to OPP, officers also discovered the vehicle was not insured and the driver failed to wear a seatbelt.
As a result, the vehicle was towed, and the driver is awaiting a court date, noted OPP on X. Police explain that RIDE programs are an essential tool for police to help keep impaired drivers off our roads.
The sobriety-testing initiative permits officers to perform random roadside checks to determine if drivers are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
“Doing drugs and driving will result in the same punishment as drinking and driving,” officials warn.
Police are reminding drivers that driving sober is critical to keep our roads safe — and those that drive under the influence will face serious consequences.
