Months-long road closures near Colonel By, Hwy. 417 to impact traffic

The City of Ottawa has announced new road closures beginning next week, due to ongoing construction for the Greenfield Avenue, Main Street, Hawthorne Avenue reconstruction project.

The closures of Main Street and Greenfield Avenue have been approved by the city, to allow for the construction of new watermains, sewers and associated road rehabilitation, read the city’s website.

Closures will be in effect until late summer 2025, the municipality noted.

On Tuesday, April 1, southbound Greenfield Avenue is set to close between the Highway 417 on-ramp and Main Street. Additionally, southbound Main Street will be closed between Greenfield Avenue to Hawthorne Avenue.

“To ensure safety for all, the road closures are required to allow for adequate space for the construction activity to take place,” city staff wrote.

Traffic impacts

According to the City of Ottawa, several detours will be available during road closures.

This includes a detour for the closure of Main Street southbound via Hawthorne Avenue from Colonel By Drive to Main Street.

A detour for the closure of Greenfield Avenue will be maintained via Lees Avenue from King Edward Avenue/Mann Avenue to Main Street.

Additionally, a detour for those wanting to travel northbound on Greenfield Avenue will be via Hawthorne Avenue.

OC Transpo

As a result of Main Street and Greenfield Avenue closures, changes to OC Transpo service will include:

  • Detour route for Route #55 Westgate via Highway 417 between Greenfield Avenue and Metcalfe Street
  • Service on Route #55 will be removed from bus stops on Greenfield Avenue southbound (#7042), Main Street southbound (#7627) and Hawthorne Avenue westbound (#7633, #7634)
  • Service on route 55 Westgate will be available at alternative bus stops on Mann Avenue at King Edward Avenue and on Main Street at Lees Avenue.

Parking

According to the City of Ottawa, there will be no on-street parking during the closures.

If residential driveway access is restricted due to construction activities, the city will distribute a temporary On-Street Parking Permit to allow on-street parking within two blocks of a residence.

The city notes that residents with electric vehicles will be required to find alternative charging arrangements if access is limited — and the use of extension cords is not permitted.

Additionally, there may be instances where construction equipment and/or contractor vehicles will result in impacts to residential access, explained the city.

“The operators of these equipment/vehicles will be present and can accommodate access/egress upon request,” they added.

While pedestrian access through the construction area will be maintained, cycling access will only be available northbound with mixed traffic.

Garbage collection

Garbage collection will remain unchanged for residents in the construction area, noted Ottawa.

“The contractor is aware of the garbage collection schedule and is required to maintain access so that garbage can be collected at the curb,” it said.

If vehicle access is limited, the contractor is expected to transport garbage from the homeowner’s curb to a location where it can be picked up — and empty containers will be returned to the homeowners/businesses.
