Northbound Highway 416 has reopened between Highway 401 and County Road 21, south of Spencerville, following closure in response to a multiple car pile up.
Before midnight on Friday, a northbound vehicle left the road and rolled into the ditch. Police say multiple passerby vehicles stopped to offer assistance.
Shortly after, another vehicle left the road, striking one of the parked vehicles and entering the ditch. First responders say several people were injured; four were transported to a regional trauma centre with serious injuries and at least four others were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The northbound lanes were closed until around 2 p.m. while the OPP Technical Collision Investigation Team completes the on-scene portion of the investigation.
OPP recommend postponing all non-essential travel as significant snow, freezing rain and ice is expected in an early spring storm across eastern Ontario.
Between midnight and 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning, OPP East Region officers responded to nearly 70 collisions as a result of weather conditions. Most were vehicles that ended up in ditches. One was fatal.
Just before 9:30 a.m., the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry OPP responding to a collision involving a car and two tractor-trailers. One person was confirmed deceased at the scene.
