Teen stunt driver, wanted person among those caught in car meet crackdown

A teen stunt driver and a wanted person were among those charged during an unauthorized car meet Saturday.

Ottawa Police Service says its Traffic Escort and Front-Line Patrol officers were in the Kanata area the evening of April 12 as part of the Residents Matter enforcement response to the pop up of large unauthorized meet ups.

Police laid numerous provincial offence notices for speeding, obstructed license plats or failure to display proper plates, and driving without a validated permit. In total 26 provincial offence notices were issued.

In addition, four Part 3 Court Summons were issued, all given to those under the age of 22.

On Highway 416 at West Hunt Club Road, a 17-year-old with a G2 licence was stopped for speeding at 156km/h in a 100km/h zone. He was driving his friend’s father’s car.

The driver now faces stunt driving charges, which immediately results in a 30-day licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment. The driver is also required to attend court where, upon conviction, will face a fine between $2,000 and $10,000, a further licence suspension of one to three years, six demerit points and the possibility of six months jail time.

On Highway 417 at Palladium Drive, a 21-year-old male was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, obstruction of a peace officer and public mischief. The man was a wanted person for failure to appear in court.

“Ottawa Police, along with OPP, will continue to monitor these car gatherings and will have a zero-tolerance approach to any illegal activity,” Constable Phil Kane, of the Ottawa Police Traffic Escort & Enforcement Unit, said in a press release.
