Construction season: Road closures and lane reductions in Ottawa

The unofficial season — construction — is starting in the nation’s capital, which means drivers and pedestrians alike are in for a number of headaches over the next several weeks.

Starting April 15, the eastbound exit at Metcalfe Street off Highway 417 will be closed from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Thursday.

The city says in a press release this is so workers can inspect the valve chamber at the Isabella and O’Connor streets intersections. Signs will be in place, but the municipality says people should allow extra travel time.

Due to this construction, Isabella Street eastbound lanes will be reduced through O’Connor Street, which will be reduced to one lane southbound from Catherine Street to Isabella.

Daily closures

Lane impacts will happen on Prince of Wales Drive on April 16 due to a guiderail installation.

The construction will happen between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. between Green Valley Crescent and Peridot Private. Pedestrians and cyclists are allowed to pass through the area.

Stage 2 of the light rail transit system is causing impacts to commuters on Highway 174.

The highway will have a lane closed at Trim Road on April 16 between 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Closures are coming to the off-ramp from the highway at Champlain Street on April 17 between 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The right turn lane on Highway 174 off-ramp to Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard will be closed between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on the same day.

Longer term construction

The Airport Parkway Overpass Renewal project kicked off earlier this week, and construction is expected to last until the end of May.

This means Uplands Drive at Airport Parkway will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

Renewals are also impacting the St. Patrick Street bridge leading to Vanier Parkway. This disruption is planned for the next several years, the city says.

“Traffic flow across the bridge will be maintained in both directions with two traffic lanes in each direction, but there may be delays,” a release notes.

The project should be completed by the end of summer 2027.
