Donations needed to help abandoned 2-year-old pug named Petunia

A member of the public found a pregnant pug who has now given birth in the safety of the Ottawa Humane Society (OHS).

The organization says that Petunia and her puppies are among the thousands of animals who will need the shelter’s support this year, causing added pressure for OHS. According to the organization’s data, from January to April last year, it admitted 11 puppies; now, demand is more than seven times that.

“It’s been 20 years since we’ve seen this many puppies,” Sharon Miko, OHS President and CEO, said in a press release. “Petunia is one of the lucky ones. I don’t want to think about what happens to abandoned pets who are never found.”

To boost donations, an anonymous donor is matching any funds given to OHS on April 24.

It’s not just canines the shelter is hoping the funds will help, springtime is the group’s largest season for kittens.

Last year, the shelter took in 25 cats in a single day, 18 of which were kittens. Most of them were found outdoors and brought in by the public.

The donations will go to help costs for adoption and medical procedures, like the recent addition of a 5-year-old cat.

“Smokey came to us with a badly injured eye,” explained Dr. Shelley Hutchings, OHS Chief Veterinarian. “We removed his eye to make sure he could live his best, healthy, pain-free life. We depend on our community’s support to provide this level of care every day and find pets new forever homes.”
