Crews were called to a building in Ottawa’s Chinatown neighbourhood where smoke and flames were “pouring” into the night sky.
The communications division told firefighters at 8:43 p.m. on Monday that multiple people were reporting a fire. Callers were describing smoke and flames were visible and coming from a two-storey building in the 0-100 block of Bell Street North.
Within two minutes teams were dispatched and on scene. They saw the heavy flames and confirmed the fire had spread from the bottom of the building to the roof.
“Heavy smoke was pouring out from the basement window as well,” Ottawa fire said.
Teams launched a fast attack and brought a hose to the back of the building. Another crew began searching the structure and no one was found inside. Teams were using chainsaws to pull a part sections of the roof to douse hotspots as flames kept spreading to the walls and ceiling.
By 9:29 p.m. the fire was under control. Victim services was sent to the scene to help the lone person who was displaced.
Ottawa fire confirmed there were no injuries as a result of the blaze.
