Two Ottawa men charged after posing as bank fraud investigators

Two people are facing several charges in a fraud case that saw the accused pose as bank investigators.

Ottawa police have been looking into a number of incidents of people pretending to be bank fraud investigators. The suspects often call from fake phone numbers or use call display titles of financial institutions. Once they gain the victim’s trust, they trick them into believing their bank accounts have been hacked.

After gaining information like pins and passwords, the suspects instruct the victims to leave their cards out for a “courier” to retrieve. When the fraudster gets the card they withdraw cash and make as many purchases as possible before the victims catch on.

This scam led police to arrest a 24-year-old and a 19-year-old, both from Ottawa. They are facing offences such as:

  • Fraud exceeding $5,000
  • Conspiracy to commit an indictable offence
  • Use/possess credit card obtained by offence
  • Possess property or thing obtained by crime exceeding $5,000
  • Fraud not exceeding $,5000

Ottawa police say they believe there could be more victims and are asking people to step forward. They can call Det. McDonald, at 613-236-1222, extension 5292 or by email at mcdonaldma@ottawapolice.ca.
