Firefighters prevent blaze from spreading to entire commercial complex

Crews were called to an early morning blaze along Hunt Club Road in Ottawa’s west end.

Callers reported flames coming from the front door of a one-storey commercial building in the 500 block of West Hunt Club Road. The building houses numerous storefronts, but the one that looks like flames were coming from was The Safety House, a business focused on providing clothing for those working in various construction and trades industries.

Other businesses in the complex include Carhartt, Massage Addict Ottawa and Smoke FX vape shop.

Firefighters were on scene four minutes after being dispatched and confirmed flames and heavy smoke coming from the building. Using a rotary saw and a sledgehammer, crews forced entry into the structure and searched the floor for people but no one was inside.

They noted there was zero visibility conditions inside the building.

Officials set up an aerial ladder at the back of the building and those inside removed ceiling tiles in the loft and said the fire hadn’t extended into the attic and roof.

The blaze was declared under control by 2:52 a.m. and didn’t spread to nearby businesses, crews reported.

After ventilating the building, crews left the scene as a fire investigator started their investigation.
