Suspected impaired G2 driver hits OPP cruiser during traffic stop

A police cruiser was hit from behind on Aug. 13 by a suspected impaired driver, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said.

The incident happened on St. Laurent Boulevard around 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Two police officers were conducting a traffic stop when the rear cruiser was hit from behind.

Police suspected the driver who crashed into the cruiser was impaired, so they conducted tests. At the OPP detachment, police said the driver registered more than twice the legal limit.

Upon further investigation, police also learned the driver had a G2 licence.

As a result, Gregory Haddock, 45, from Ottawa is facing charges of:

  • Operation while impaired- alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired- blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Dangerous operation
  • Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available
  • Novice driver – B.A.C Above Zero

The accused received an immediate 90-day driving suspension, and their vehicle was impounded for seven days.

“Traffic stops remain one of the most dangerous aspects of policing, with the majority of police officer injuries or deaths happening during a traffic stop,” OPP said in a post.
