A package of suspected opium arriving from India has been seized in Ottawa, officials said in a press release.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said they intercepted a shipment containing the substance used to produce heroin.
It is unclear when the package arrived in Canada but it’s believed to be recent.
Once CBSA officers identified the package containing over 100 grams of the illegal drug, OPP was contacted for an investigation.
Last week on Sept. 3, 2025, OPP and CBSA executed a search warrant on Ryan Drive in Ottawa, where the package was intended to be delivered.
Following that search, 22-year-old Gurpreet Singh of Ottawa was charged with importing a Schedule 1 substance. They were released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in October.
Police continue to investigate and said they foresee charing two other people in.
