9 charged after police raid several magic mushroom stores

Officers executed nine search warrants and seized kilograms of psilocybin, known as magic mushrooms, in a 24-hour bust.

In a press release, officials shared that on Oct. 2 and 3, police, with help from several neighbourhood resource teams, went to nine search buildings that were suspected locations to sell the illegal drug. It is a Schedule III substance.

The following locations were searched by officers:

  • Two locations in the 100 block of Montreal Road
  • 1–100 block of Northside Road
  • 300 block of Churchill Avenue
  • 700 block of Somerset Street West
  • 900 block of St. Laurent Boulevard
  • Two locations in the 200 block of Dalhousie Street
  • 100 block of Rideau Street

The seizures resulted in over $10,000 in currency, more than 14 kilograms of mushrooms and multiple beverages or edibles of the drugs taken.

In the bust, nine people are facing charges for possession with the purpose of trafficking and proceeds of crime, along with over a dozen other offences.

“While synthetic opioid traffickers, such as those dealing fentanyl and organized crime groups, continue to be a top priority, those involved in the drug trade who engage in violence or activities that threaten public safety also become top priorities for our teams,”  S/Sgt James McGarry said in a press release.

Officials are also warning property owners and landlords to come forward if they suspect or realize illegal drug sales are occurring at their properties. Police said knowing and allowing it to happen could result in criminal charges for the owner.

“Unlawful drug operations, including illicit mushroom shops, can attract violence. In recent weeks, two illegal psilocybin shops have been the targets of arson,” the release notes.
