Several people pretending to be personal support workers (PSW) to work with vulnerable people in Ottawa facing charges.
According to a press release, the seven people used fake credentials, like forged diplomas, to gain employment. The Elder and Vulnerable Adult Unit launched the investigation on April 25 and found reports of the accused posing as PSWs with vulnerable community members.
Police closed the investigation last week and laid 12 charges to people between the ages of 22 to 48.
“Due to their diligence during the employee screening process, the company identified the fake diplomas and subsequently reported the matter to the police,” officials told CityNews in an email.
According to officers, no one was hired, so there were no vulnerable people placed at risk.
“The Ottawa Police Service is dedicated to ensuring that the safety of the vulnerable section is paramount and will investigate crimes that put those in the vulnerable section at risk,” said Staff Sergeant Sammie Brennan of the Financial Crimes Unit.
