Theft, mischief and possession among charges faced by Kingston man

One person is in custody, facing a slew of charges following an investigation in the Rideau Lakes area.

Officers with the Frontenac Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a cottage in Perth Road south of Westport on Nov. 2 shortly after 4:30 p.m. A caller had reported a suspicious person on the property.

Responding officers spotted a man who ran into the forest, leaving a vehicle behind.

Police confirmed that the vehicle had earlier been reported stolen.

Officers were joined by the Canine Unit to begin a search of the area. The suspect was located just before 7 p.m.

Officers recovered stolen property, including household appliances and other household items, power tools, and hunting and camping equipment. Officers also seized a quantity of suspected methamphetamine.

Benjamin Frew, a 49-year-old Kingston resident, has now been charged with the following:

  • Entering premises when prohibited;
  • Mischief – destroys or damages property;
  • Possession of break-in tools;
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000;
  • Theft of a vehicle;
  • Using a licence plate not in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act;
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 substance;
  • Operation of a vehicle while prohibited under the Criminal Code; and
  • Four counts of failure to comply with an undertaking.
