Ottawa firefighters were called to a home after a vehicle slammed into its garage on Tuesday afternoon.
According to crews, they were called by Ottawa police around 4:46 p.m. after a vehicle was driven into a home in the 100 block of Queen Mary Street in the Overbrook community.
When they arrived, firefighters found that a cargo van had gone through a cedar hedge into the two-storey single-family home. The driver was not trapped and was able to exit by themselves.
Crews shut off the vehicle and went into the home to check for hazards, finding no one was inside. The homeowners did arrive while officials were on scene.
“Structural damage was identified on the west side of the garage and the house,” officials said in a release.
The structural collapse team found that a central beam was not supported after the van had pushed out a post in the garage. They looked at the situation and confirmed there wasn’t more damage to the main home or the second floor above the garage.
They used cribbing and large wedges to support the beam until they could remove the van. Once the vehicle was cleared, more shores were installed to provide further support.
A City of Ottawa engineer was called to the scene and hydro crews disconnected power to the home as a precaution.
