Snow on the way for Ottawa this weekend

The first possible snowfall is on the way as fall temperatures could be dipping below this weekend for the nation’s capital.

According to Environment Canada, the weekend will start with rain and a high of 4 C. The showers are set to end by the evening with intermittent rain throughout the night.

Temperatures will hover just above 0 and rise as the sun peeks through clouds on Saturday. Wind gusts of around 20 km/h are expected, the weather agency said.

Overnight Saturday into Sunday is when temperatures will drop to -6 C and bring a likelihood of flurries.

The final day of the weekend, Environment Canada is calling for snow and temperatures around 0 C, dropping to -3 C overnight.

It’s the first possibility of snow this season, although some flakes fell in the nation’s capital earlier this week, but did not stick around.

The forecast is calling for much cooler-than-normal temperatures on Monday night for lows around -13 C, the first real taste of the wintery weather.

Normals this time of year hover around 7 C and -1 C.

Snow tires needed

As every winter season approaches, provincial police are warning drivers to prepare for messy road conditions.

On Friday morning, officers in the Ottawa Valley reported seeing icy patches on Highway 60, asking drivers to keep an eye out. Officials are also reminding people to prepare for the colder months by making sure snow tires are on their vehicles and windshield wipers are in good condition.

“Slow down, leave extra room and allow extra time,” police said.

City preparing for snow

The precipitation is coming just as the City of Ottawa sent out a memo explaining what staff are doing to turn over services from fall to winter.

The information details how workers are cleaning public spaces and removing some bicycle bollards, closing splash pads and pools. Flipping over spaces to winter by installing rink boards and repairing seasonal damage.

Staff are reminding people that between Nov. 15 and April 1, winter weather parking bans could be called.
