G1 driver among 2 charged with stunt driving

A G1 driver is one of two motorists facing stunt driving charges following traffic enforcement on Thursday.

Around 1 p.m., the Ottawa Police Service Traffic Escort and Enforcement Unit was conducting enforcement when an officer observed two vehicles travelling 159 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Hwy. 174 near Tenth Line Road.

Police say the vehicles reached top speeds of nearly 170 km/h as they approached the Trim Road intersection.

The Traffic Escort and Enforcement officer was able to safely stop the vehicles.

As a result, both drivers have been charged.

A 31-year-old G1 driver, who police say had no qualified driver in the vehicle and was driving with a suspended licence, was charged with the following:

  • Stunt Drive – Excessive Speed;
  • Race A Motor Vehicle;
  • Class G1 Licence Holder – Unaccompanied; and
  • Driving While Under Suspension.

The driver of the second vehicle, an 18-year-old, was charged with stunt driving and racing.

Both drivers had their licences suspended for 30 days and vehicles impounded for 14 days. They will appear in court at a later date.

OPS says a stunt driving conviction carries a penalty of $2,000 to $10,000, six demerit points, a one to three year licence suspension, and a possible six months in jail.

Driving under suspension carries a minimum fine of $1,000.
