2 large dogs dead after townhouse fire

Two more pets have died in a house fire in Ottawa after crews tackled a kitchen blaze on Wednesday morning.

The two large dogs, which firefighters said weighed about 100 pounds each, were found unresponsive in a townhome in the Qualicum-Redwood community, near Pinecrest Road.

Teams were called to the 2500 block of Draper Avenue around 8:51 a.m. on Jan. 21 by a resident reporting that their neighbour’s end-unit home was filling with smoke. Crews arrived within three minutes and found smoke pouring from the structure.

Quickly, they brought a hose inside the home and found flames coming from the kitchen.

Another team was searching the building while crews tackled the flames. That’s when they found the two dogs. Both pets were brought outside, where lifesaving efforts were initiated, but both succumbed to their injuries.

The kitchen fire was contained and declared under control by 9:27 a.m. Firefighters checked attached townhomes, noting a light odour of smoke was detected.

As a result of the incident, one adult and two children have been displaced.

This is the second fire that killed people’s pets in Ottawa in a day.

Early Tuesday morning, crews were called to Vanier South, where residents reported that heavy black smoke was coming from their home. The four people who lived there were able to escape with one dog, but three more pets were still inside.

The three cats and a dog were found by firefighters unconscious and brought outside for resuscitation, but they succumbed to their injuries.
