An early Tuesday morning fire killed four pets of the four residents who lived in a home in Vanier South.
Firefighters were called to a residential fire at 2:33 a.m. One of the residents told crews that smoke and flames were in the basement of the home in the 300 block of Dieppe Street.
The caller confirmed that all four people had been able to evacuate before teams arrived.
Firefighters arrived within four minutes and could see heavy black smoke coming from the house. They were met by the residents, who said they had escaped with one dog but that another dog and three cats remained in the house.
Quickly moving a hose through the structure, teams found the flames in the basement. Dousing them quickly while another crew searched the residence.
The three cats and dog were found by a team unconscious and brought outside for resuscitation, but they succumbed to their injuries.
By 3:11 a.m. firefighters had the fire under control. They did remove sections of the ceiling and window to douse more hot spots.
An Ottawa fire investigator was dispatched to determine the cause.
The three adults and one child who lived in the house were displaced from the incident.
