It’s going to be a frigid start to the weekend in the nation’s capital, as Environment Canada warns of bone-chilling cold.
According to the weather agency, temperatures are expected to drop over Thursday into Friday, but with the wind chill, it will be bitterly cold. The wind could make it feel closer to -33 to -38.
It is asking people to cover up, as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin. The agency notes that if it’s too cold outside for people, it is also too cold for pets.
“Watch for colour changes on fingers and toes, pain, numbness, a tingling sensation, or swelling. If present, move indoors and begin warming,” the warning reads.
There is also a risk of hypothermia for people outside for long periods of time. The public health agency says people should wear multiple layers of clothing, covering all exposed skin.
For those experiencing homelessness, there are several drop-in centres, emergency shelters and the Salvation Army’s 24/7 Outreach Van in the city.
People can call 311 to get help finding the best shelter or can call for others who need transportation out of the cold.
Ottawa also has a map of resources across the city of spaces where people are welcome to warm up.
