Two-alarm Manotick blaze takes hours to get under control

When fire crews arrived, flames were quickly spreading through a two-storey home in Manotick along the Rideau River.

On Thursday around 5:50 p.m., several phone calls flooded the Ottawa fire communication centre for a blaze that started outside and was making its way inside a home. Crews were dispatched to the 1000 block of Bravar Drive, where they were met with a house engulfed in flames and smoke billowing into the sky.

They were not able to enter the building and instead had to attack the fire from the outside, Ottawa fire Chief Paul Hutt told CityNews in an interview.

“They were met with heavy flame conditions coming the first floor of the house — pretty much the entire first level was engulfed in flames,” he said.

Minutes after the first team arrived, a second alarm was called to quickly bring in more resources. This was determined because there was fear that the fire could spread to the neighbouring houses.

By 8:52 p.m., several hours after the first calls, firefighters had the “challenging” fire under control.

“There are parts of the home still standing,” Hutt said. “Late (Thursday) night here was some extra some equipment being brought in to help render the property safe because it was very close to a an adjacent property as well. So we didn’t want any of the remnants of the house falling on the neighbors property.”

The home is considered a total loss, he said. A fire investigator was dispatched to the scene to determine the cause of the blaze.

One person was home at the time of the incident.
