Safety initiative well underway last weekend in Downtown Rideau

On Friday, June 26 and Saturday, 27, police were present in the ByWard Market and Downtown Rideau area as part of the Community Safety Initiatives happening this summer.
Increased police presence can be expected for the rest of the summer in this area as officers work to address disorderly conduct to help support local businesses and improve public safety.
Results of their weekend patrol
- 67 by-law infractions
- 20 alcohol interventions
- 16 inspections/walkthroughs
- 12 traffic stops
- 8 Provincial Offence Notices
- 1 arrest on an outstanding warrant
Officers also managed traffic-related issues, including cellphone use, seatbelt violations, expired plates, excessive noise and passengers hanging from vehicle windows. They issued verbal warnings and helped to educate drivers whenever possible.
During inspections and walkthroughs with enforcement partners, two unlicensed security guards were identified and charged, according to a release.
The Community Safety Initiative is a partnership between police, OC Transpo, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and the City of Ottawa’s By-law and Regulatory Services.
These teams aim to fight back against disorderly conduct, including violations of the Liquor Licence and Control Act, criminal behaviour, and activities that impact public safety and, subsequently, the community and local businesses.
