Intimate partner violence going down in Ottawa

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) said they have seen a decline in Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), as part of their commitment to report on IPV statistics twice a year.

OPS said there was a 5 per cent decrease in reports in the first six months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. There were 3775 intimate partner-related incidents reported in the first six months of 2026 compared to 3977 reports for the same time-frame in 2025.

In January 2025, OPS announced they would report on IPV trends in Ottawa annually and semi-annually to enhance accountability and raise awareness about Violence Against Women.

These statistics are from the first half of 2026 OPS crime data related to all IPV incidents, and as such, victims, both male and female, are represented. OPS found the most common reports had to do with Assault-Partner Breaches, Harass Communication-Partner and Assault with Weapon.

Sexual Assault-Partner demographics per age group:

  • 8.9 per cent were under 19 yrs old
  • 27.6 per cent were between the ages of 20 and 29
  • 44 per cent were between the ages of 30 and 44
  • 14.9 per cent were between the ages of 45 and 59
  • 4.6 per cent were over the age of 60

Of these, 82.3 per cent identified as female and 17.4 per cent identified as male.

If you are experiencing intimate partner violence, help is always available. OPS urges you to reach out — to police, to shelters, to crisis lines — when you are ready.
