Driver stopped for the third time in 1.5 years for using phone

Ontario Provincial Police pulled over a driver after an officer watched them use their phone while behind the wheel.

According to a release by officials, the officer was on Highway 417 near Moodie Drive. They saw the person using their phone while going by. OPP pulled the white car over and ran the driver’s licence, revealing this was the third time in one-and-a-half years that they were caught using their phone.

“If convicted of all three charges, this driver could face higher fines and a longer suspension,” police said.

The fine for a single conviction is $615, three demerit points and a three-day driving suspension.

Police have seen a laptop being used

Officials have said that distracted driving is one of the reasons behind fatal crashes in the province, and a continued problem in Ottawa.

In Ontario, a driver using a phone is four times more likely to crash than a driver focusing on the road, according to the province’s website. This results in one person being injured in distracted driving every half an hour.

In May, police conducted a blitz where they specifically looked for distracted driving and charged 23 people in one day.

In one egregious instance, police detailed that a driver was using his laptop while he drove. On May 20, during the traffic enforcement push, several people were caught by police for using and touching their phones from behind the wheel, some of whom officers shared the photos of.
