Mexican navy: 1 injured in clash near vaquita reserve

MEXICO CITY — The Mexican navy says one fisherman has been injured in a clash with marines in the state of Baja California.

The navy confirmed late Thursday that a confrontation in the coastal town of San Felipe began when environmentalists from the Sea Shepherd group confiscated illegal nets set for Totoaba fish.

The nets often trap the vaquita porpoise, which is close to extinction.

When one small fishing boat attacked the environmentalists to get its net back, the navy said armed forces intervened. It said a marine’s gun accidentally went off, injuring a man.

A local fisherman who asked not to be named for safety reasons said two more people may have also been wounded in subsequent protests.
