OPP finding more open vehicles in Carleton Place, Almonte during ‘Lock It or Lose It’ campaign

By CityNews Ottawa

Provincial police are reminding residents to keep their valuables safe and secure, as their 'Lock It or Lose It' campaign continues in Carleton Place and Almonte.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) auxiliary constables checked parked vehicles throughout the towns last weekend and found that 60 of 360 were unlocked or had valuables visible inside.

A couple of weeks ago,OPP auxiliary constables in the Pembroke area say they saw cash and valuables, including a purse, sunglasses, groceries and electronics in plain view in some vehicles, and in one instance, an unlocked vehicle had the keys in the ignition.

As the 'Lock It or Lose It' campaign continues, police officers, auxiliary officers, and crime prevention personnel will be examining parked vehicles and placing small notices on ones checked, indicating what safety precautions were neglected and offering prevention tips for drivers to protect their vehicles against theft.

The notices also congratulate drivers who have properly secured their vehicle.

The OPP is expected to continue to use 'Lock It or Lose It' notices throughout the year as part of its on-going crime prevention efforts.
