Friends of paralyzed Ottawa vet raise funds for special van

By Jason White

A fundraising campaign aims to purchase a specially-outfitted van for a veteran who was paralyzed in an accident in Barbados.

Col. Greg Hug (Ret'd.) was bodysurfing, when a wave slammed him into the ocean floor, fracturing bones his upper spine.

“Had it not been for two doctors from Toronto who happened to be on that beach at that time, he probably would not be with us today,” said Col. Mike Appleton (Ret'd.)  Appleton is one of the military comrades helping to raise $75,000 for a van outfitted with a wheelchair lift.

Hug currently uses Para Transpo to get around, but use of that service is limited to one stop per day. Appleton says a van would give Hug more freedom.

“They could have the freedom to go to multiple destinations in a single day, and even leave town if they wish,” Appleton told Ottawa Today with Mark Sutcliffe on 1310 NEWS.

The group is approaching its goal of $75,000; if they surpass it, the excess money will go to Wounded Warriors Canada.
