Councillor calling on Burger King to step up security at Vanier location after shooting

A shooting inside the Burger King on Montreal Road on Wednesday evening has sparked a call for more safety in the area. 

Rideau-Vanier councillor Mathieu Fleury admits this isn't the first report of illegal activity taking place at the local fast food joint. 

Fleury explained that the city has received complaints about safety, drug use and cleanliness in and around the restaurant. 

“The Burger King on Montreal Road is a problem and certainly we'd love the corporate offices of Burger King Canada to be involved,” Fleury said. “To equip their store managers and their franchisees with the tools in protecting their store and the community safety around their store.”

Fleury said he has approached both the franchisee and the manager about these issues but has not seen any results.

He said that after two years of trying to get them to sit up and take notice, he's not expecting any changes until head office gets involved. 

“Certainly so far, they've been oblivious to the criminal activity and drug exchange issues at their store.” 

There is a post-incident protocol that the city follows when incidents happen in the Rideau-Vanier area. 

This includes a discussion between the councillor, community associations, the BIA, police and other members of city staff. 

“We'll discuss the next steps relating to the incident at the Burger King, including how do we see better results and better engagement from that franchisee.”

Ottawa Police say this shooting was targeted and gang-related. They are still investigating.
