They couldn't hug each other, due to pandemic restrictions, but Gatineau police officers Kaven Tremblay, Janvier Gagnon-Ouellet and Sébastien Pépin-Villeneuve say it was still emotional to see a child they helped save a few months ago.
The three were on patrol, back on September 11, when they received a call concerning an unconscious five-month-old baby who had choked.
In less than two minutes, the officers arrived at the scene and started to provide care to the baby, more specifically practicing cardiopulmonary resuscitation and obstruction maneuvers.
After a few minutes, baby Lowan was able to breathe on his own again. Once Lowan's situation stabilized, paramedics transported the baby to the hospital where he was taken care of.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the whole team who were there to help our little boy,” say Jérémie and Amanda, Lowan's parents, in a translated statement. “You acted quickly and without hesitation. You reassured us with a very human approach. You did an impeccable job from start to finish. Special thanks to Janvier Gagnon-Ouellet. We are grateful to have had you that day and lucky to have you here in Gatineau. “
The baby and officers were reunited on Wednesday, December 23. Lowan has recovered from the event without long-term consequences.
“It was a great pleasure for me to see the baby again, full of life, and to have been able to make a difference for them. I wish them a lot of family happiness,” says Gagnon-Ouellet.
“The job of a police officer makes us go through different emotions. When the situation involves a child, it is never easy,” says Tremblay. “When Lowan came back with us that day, it was a great moment of happiness. Today, I was very happy to see this little man full of energy after having overcome so many difficult times.”
