Queensway Carleton warns of extended wait times in emergency department

By Alex Black

The Queensway Carleton Hospital (QCH) is reporting a higher than normal volume of patients who require extended care.

In a series of tweets, the Queensway Carleton Hospital and Foundation said wait times have grown significantly in the emergency department (ED) due to staffing shortages and patients are being prioritized based on the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale.

The scale ranges from life-threatening conditions that need immediate care to non-urgent conditions where care can be delayed safely.

Where a patient falls on the scale is being determined through an assessment upon arrival at hospital.

The hospital is asking the public for patience as health care facilities across the province have been dealing with staffing shortages and extended wait times.

“We know the waiting is long and tiring and hard,” the hospital said. “Please know the team is working hard to care for everyone and get patients who need to be admitted, admitted. There is a wait right now. We are actively working on it every day, ensuring those who need care, get it.”
