Algonquin College is saving seats for women in some of its technology programs.
The Nepean-based college has started a new initiative, called “We Saved You a Seat,” which will reserve 30 per cent of spaces in its four most popular technology programs for women who meet minimum admission requirements.
Algonquin College created the program to reduce feelings of isolation women may have in what are typically male-dominated programs.
“I am very proud of this program. It is a chance for us to not only encourage women in technology, but also to support them once they arrive here,” said Algonquin College President Cheryl Jensen. “We are making a bold statement about who we are as a College, and we are a College that supports all our learners.”
The programs the initiative will include are the courses for electrical engineering technician, mechanical engineering technology, electro-mechanical engineering technician and computer systems technician.
The female students who join the programs under the initiative will also have access to increased mentorship, scholarships and bursaries to support women in technology programs.
The college will start saving seats for spring 2019 applications.
