Ottawa doctors being recognized provincially for contributions to family medicine

By Mike Vlasveld

Three Ottawa doctors are being named as Award of Excellence recipients by the Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP).

Dr. Richard Waldolf, Dr. Arun Radhakrishnan and Dr. John Brewer were nominated by their peers or members of the public for exceptional achievement over the last two years, pertaining to the specialty of family medicine.

Dr. Waldolf is being honoured for sharing medical knowledge through simulation.

A family physician with a specialty in anesthesia, Dr. Waldolf is considered an innovator in medical education. He is the Simulation Program Director for Hôpital Montfort's Institute of Knowledge and has created novel workshops, such as “911 Office Emergencies,” a simulation of commonly faced office emergencies, and “Roadside Delivery,” a workshop on delivering babies outside the hospital setting.

Dr. Radhakrishnan is being awarded for his work in supporting physician management of chronic pain and opioid use disorder through education and mentorship.

Dr. Radhakrishnan is a family physician with a focused practice in chronic non-cancer pain. He also teaches at the Ottawa Hospital Academic Family Health Team. As clinical lead for the OCFP's award-winning Collaborative Mentoring Networks (CMN) and co-chair of the two long-standing networks on mental health, as well as addictions and pain, he has led the successful expansion of the CMN to other pressing areas such as rural medicine and medical assistance in dying. Dr. Radhakrishnan is also a mentor himself, working to ensure family physicians province-wide are well supported in managing their patients' chronic pain and opioid use.

Dr. John Brewer is being recognized for his efforts in advocating to give family medicine a stronger voice.

Dr. Brewer is a family physician at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) and Chief of the Department of Family Practice. He is widely known as a visionary leader who actively embraces progress and change, and a tireless advocate for family medicine. Taking the helm during a time of uncertainty, province-wide hospital deficits and significant changes at TOH, he established a committee with the head of each family physician specialty, increasing cohesiveness and forging stronger relationships between team members.

The three doctors will receive their awards during the 2019 OCFP Awards Ceremony on November 28 in Toronto.
