Two people suffer burns in bungalow fire near Algonquin College

Firefighters spent the early morning hours battling a stubborn house fire in Nepean.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) responded to a bungalow in the 100 block of Rossland Avenue, near Algonquin College, shorty after 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

A neighbour had called 9-1-1 to report flames coming through the window of a single-family home across the street.

Two occupants had evacuated the home when crews arrived on scene and both had to be treated for burn injuries and smoke inhalation.

Firefighters discovered that smoke and flames had spread from the first floor into the roof and a working fire was quickly declared.

They began a fast attack, moving inside the home, and after completing two full searches, confirmed there was no one else inside.

An aerial ladder was set up so firefighters could get at the fire from above and conduct roof operations, while firefighters inside the home pulled down part of the ceiling to access the flames.

The fire was declared under control at 5:11 a.m. and an OFS investigator has been dispatched to determine what caused the blaze.

Victim Services has also responded to assist two adults who have been displaced.
