Drivers caught going almost double the limits on Ottawa roads

Dozens of speeding charges were laid and other issues found when Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Ottawa police joined forces for two late-night blitzes.
Officers were out on July 17 and 18 to target dangerous driving on Ottawa roads. Multiple units in the evenings participated, including the OPP airplane, which took to the skies, tracking drivers police on the ground flagged.
In the operation, a total of 63 charges were laid, including:
- 11 stunt driving charges
- 35 speeding charges
- five driving while under suspension charges
- two no insurance charges
- 10 additional traffic-related charges
Police clocked several vehicles at a high rate of speed, including two that were nearing double the limit in a 100 km/h zone.

Officials said drivers were caught going:
- 172 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone
- 186 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone
- 161 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone
- 186 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone
Ottawa OPP issuing stricter charges
There have been several instances of drivers travelling on Ottawa roadways above the threshold for stunt driving charges. In some situations, police are catching the same drivers for speeds double the limit.
Because of this, OPP Constable Michael Fathi said police have consulted the Crown in Ottawa and agreed that any speeds over 180 km/h, officers can lay a dangerous driving charge.
“We’re trying to get the message out to people that you’re not facing just highway traffic charges, but you could now be facing a criminal code charge,” he said.
