Police watchdog probing after weapon discharged by OPP officer

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) opened a case after an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer discharged a weapon during the arrest of a 23-year-old.

The incident happened April 10 around 3:50 p.m. in the Ottawa Valley community of Renfrew. The SIU can invoke its mandate when there is an interaction involving a weapon or altercation between a civilian and an officer.

Officers were called to a home on Munroe Avenue East for a domestic disturbance. The press release from the SIU says the man in question left the house and ran to a nearby residential yard. There, the 23-year-old and police had an interaction, which led to the officer discharging his Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield (ARWE), striking the suspect.

The accused was arrested but not seriously injured.

The SIU said that three of its investigators have been assigned to the case.

The watchdog is asking anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
