Kanata man charged after shooting paintballs at neighbour’s flag

Ottawa police laid some charges after multiple incidents of property damage in a west end community.

Officials said that a man is facing offences in connection with a “series” of mischief to property and harassment incidents between June 10 and 17 in Kanata. According to police, the accused man repeatedly targeted a symbolic flag displayed on a neighbour’s property by firing paintballs at it.

The force’s hate and bias-motivated unit launched the investigation, which led to a 41-year-old man being charged with:

  • Two counts of harassment by threatening conduct towards another person
  • Three counts of mischief/damage to property not exceeding $5,000

The accused was released on conditions.

“A hate crime is a criminal offence committed against a person or property motivated by hate/bias or prejudice based on race, national or ethnic origin, disability, sexual orientation, or other similar factors,” a press release reads.

Police say they treat these types of incidents seriously and note how these situation can have a “profound impact on the community.

“Hate crimes are extremely underreported. We encourage anyone who has experienced a hate incident to report it to us for further investigation,” officials said.
