Dog rescued from house fire in Orléans

July 31 was a busy Thursday for firefighters in the City of Ottawa.

Crews tackled two blazes at homes in a matter of a few hours, just before being called to a small plane crash.

They were first called around 8:10 a.m. for smoke and flames coming from a wooden balcony on the second storey of a single-family house.

They arrived at the 2400 block of Carlsen Avenue within four minutes and saw the heavy smoke and flames that had spread to the eaves of the home.

Using a hose line, some tackled the blaze while another team searched the home. Flames were found in the second-floor kitchen and had spread to the roof and attic. To douse them, firefighters opened up sections of the ceiling and the attic.

The house was divided into multiple apartments, making the two complete searches a process for firefighters. They did confirm no one was inside. Hours later, the blaze was under control by 11:07 a.m.

The second call came in at around 1:01 p.m. from a monitoring company about an active alarm at an end-storey unit in Orléans. The two-storey townhome in the 1500 block of Briarfield Crescent had smoke coming from the home.

Firefighters broke down the door and found flames in the kitchen.

Another team rescued a dog after two searches were done of the home where no other people were found.

The blaze was quickly extinguished, and due to the quick action of officials, the homeowner will not be displaced.
