It was a triumphant homecoming for Maeliss Trapeau, taking gold in the women’s 800m at the 2025 Canadian Track and Field Championships, after years of training in France.
Growing up in Ottawa and racing for both Lycée Claudel and the University of Ottawa Gee Gees, Trapeau is the making of a Canadian icon.
Trapeau went out conservative on the track, allowing Jazz Shukla to take the lead through the first 400m. But with 200m to go, Trapeau kicked it into high gear, overtaking Shukla and beating her by over a tenth of a second.
Trapeau took the first senior’s gold, breaking the tape at a time of 2:01.79. Racing in Toulouse, France in May of this year, she set a shiny new personal best of 1:59.09.
She is representing the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club who are the host of the 2025 Canadian Championships. She is also in the process of gaining approval from World Athletics to be eligible to represent Canada on the global stage after transferring her international allegiance.
If Trapeau runs a 1:59.00 by Aug. 24, she would clinch her place to represent Canada at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
