Vehicle collides with crash truck protecting workers on Hwy. 417

One person is facing a charge and a large fine after a vehicle collided with a construction crash truck on Highway 417 Tuesday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said in a press release that officers responded to a crash just after 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 30 in the westbound lanes near Panmure Road near Kinburn. The crash truck, a vehicle that provides protective barriers between workers and traffic, was on the highway because construction personnel were removing pylons from the area.

A vehicle crashed into the back of the protective vehicle causing minor injuries to its driver.

The person who struck the truck was charged with careless driving and faces a $490 fine and three demerit points, provincial police said. They also suffered minor injuries in the incident.

“Once again, the OPP reminds motorists to drive with extra caution in construction zones,” officials said.

This comes just after police charged four drivers with stunt driving in a construction zone near Metcalfe Street on the highway on Monday. In that situation, officers said the posted speed limit is 80 km/h, but they caught several drivers going much faster. One driver was clocked travelling 149 km/h down the stretch of roadway.

In the same update, police also noted a motorcyclist was additionally charged for having an obstructed plate.

“Speeding fines are also doubled when construction workers are present,” police said.
